Invercargill (Waihopai in Maori) is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, and one of the southernmost cities in the world (near South Pole). It is the commercial centre of the Southland region.

The first Europeans to set foot on the South Island’s southern coast were sealers in the late 1700s. Others intent on harvesting flax came in the early 1800s and whalers began arriving from 1829. Sailors, traders, and entrepreneurs followed. Maori had arrived over 600 years earlier.

Alhamdulillah over the last few years the Muslim population in Invercargill has increased dramatically.There is no community facility dedicated to the needs of the local Muslims and the city is sadly lacking in facilities for the elderly, women and our Muslim youth. For us building a Mosque and Islamic Community Centre is essential to the continued education of young Muslims, help maintain Islamic values and give a better understanding of our religion to the wider community. We are trying to build the first Masjid in this city which is the southern most part of land.

We have negotiated the purchase of a small industrial facility at 31 Fairview Avenue, Invercargill which has the potential for converting it to our permanent Masjid/ Community Centre. The City Council has given us an encouraging response to our initial informal request for approval and the neighbours are also supporting us.  The cost of purchase is NZ$ 150,000 (including taxes).  An additional amount of $50,000 will be required for the conversion of the present facility.  Click here for the details of this property.

We urgently need your help to meet the cost of the Mosque and Community Centre.We would urge the community members or anyone else to contribute whatever they can afford. We have collected about $95,000 from the local Muslim community.  We now need some external assistance to achieve our goal.  Please help us to build the first House of Allah SWT in Invercargill and Allah will build you a house for you in Jannah (according to an authentic Hadith) inshaAllah.
